‘Welcoming and inclusive’ school praised by Ofsted

Courtney Primary School in Kingswood is celebrating after being rated Good in all areas by Ofsted.

Two inspectors visited the 192-pupil school in Courtney Road in September and judged it to be Good for the quality of teaching, leadership and management and early years provision and for pupils’ behaviour and attitudes and their personal development.

Their report said: “This is a welcoming and inclusive school at the heart of its community. The school’s values of ‘nurture, inspire and flourish’ underpin all aspects of the school’s work. Pupils are wonderful ambassadors for the school. They are happy and proud to attend.”

The inspectors said there had been several changes to leadership and staffing since the last inspection. In 2019 and the  school had worked effectively with the local authority and governors to stabilise staffing and improve the curriculum. This has had a positive impact on pupils’ outcomes and their well-being, they said.

“Pastoral support is strong. The school forges valuable and supportive partnerships with pupils and their families. This has a positive impact on pupils’ well-being. Pupils feel safe at school. They trust adults to take good care of them. Many parents and carers praise the school. They typically comment on the family atmosphere,” Ofsted reported.

Other positive comments included:
• Pupils understand the school’s high expectations of them. They are respectful and behave well.
• The school provides a broad curriculum and stimulating experiences that enrich pupils’ learning.
• Pupils have exciting opportunities to develop their talents and interests.
• The school provides highly effective social and emotional support for pupils who have difficulty managing their emotions, including some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Pre-school told to improve

Our Lady of Lourdes Pre-School in Kingswood has been judged by Ofsted to require improvement.

An inspector who visited last month said staff were “kind and caring”  and  overall, most children made steady progress from their starting points.

She recommended improvements in all four areas – quality of education, leadership and management, behaviour and attitudes and personal development, at the committee-run pre-school in Court Road.
