VOLUNTEERS who have raised more than £134,000 to support people with disabilities and good causes have been awarded the Lord Mayor’s Medal.
Barton Hill Rugby Club Charity Café in Speedwell is one of just two organisations this year to receive the medal, which recognises unpaid community work that has helped improve the lives of Bristol’s citizens.
The citation praised the group and lead volunteers Mandy Bryant, Nikki Hawker, Denis Demerry and Elizabeth Harris for their “exceptional voluntary service to the Hillfields community” since opening in 2020.
It added: “Throughout the pandemic they prepared and delivered meals to vulnerable residents, organised support networks, and created daily opportunities for social connection.
“Since reopening, they have served more than 20,000 affordable or free lunches, offering vital companionship for older and isolated residents.
“Their fundraising, over £134,000 to date, has enabled the purchase of specialist wheelchairs and disability equipment for children and adults, transforming lives locally and beyond.
“Supported by a diverse group of volunteers, including a 90-year-old long‑serving helper and a Ukrainian refugee, the team exemplifies generosity, community spirit, and practical compassion.”
The cafe, open every Monday and Wednesday from noon to 3pm at Barton Hill RFC in Duncombe Lane, also supports mental health charity MIND.
The medal was presented to the four lead volunteers at a ceremony at City Hall at the end of March. There were also 21 individual recipients.
Lord Mayor Councillor Henry Michallat said: “It was a pleasure to recognise so many people and organisations for all the important work they do to improve the lives of people from all parts of the city.
“The recipients of the medal have done Bristol proud and help to make it the wonderful city it is.”
Mandy said: “We are all proud at being recognised for this award.
“The cafe is very much a team effort and there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes.
“It’s not just about the cheap food or the bargain table, it’s about friendships and doing good things.
“There is a whole team of volunteers – also including Kimmy, Paul, Raffle Chris, Natalia, Nicky G, Sandy, Shirley Worley, Jeanette, Sue, Dave, Shirley Martin, Veronica, Lisa, Brother Chris, Nicky, Paulo, Disco Dancing Bob – who all pull together to make it the success it is.
“It is an excellent team of people and we are lucky to have such a committed and charming bunch!”
The volunteers were nominated by Hillfields ward councillors Kelvin Blake and Ellie King, who said: “They truly deserve the medal for all the good work they do for our community and disabled young people.”
