Local resident Margaret Slucutt was awarded the British Empire Medal in the King’s 2026 New Year’s Honours list for services to the community in South Gloucestershire.
The honour was given in recognition of decades of service, working with older people in South Gloucestershire.
Margaret is co-chair of South Gloucestershire’s Council for Age-friendly Delivery group and a trustee of Age UK South Gloucestershire. Previously she was chair of Community Ignite and South Gloucestershire Over 50s’ Forum and a vice chair and trustee of Southern Brooks Community Partnerships.
At Unity Oldland Methodist Church she was church cecretary for many years and is a steward. Among her roles within the church, she organises monthly coffee mornings and the fortnightly Nita Nata group – plus many other things! She has also carried out vital pastoral work by keeping in regular touch with house-bound members and until recently was responsible for collating and producing the church’s monthly newsletter. Margaret also arranges the baking and collection of cakes for the charity One25 (one25.org.uk) which reaches out to women who are street sex-working in Bristol.
She is also a member of Hanham Health’s Patient Participation Group and is Secretary of Bristol Ostomy Self Support Group (www.ostomy.org.uk).
