A Bridge Too Far …

An interactive historical presentation about the Battle for Arnhem and the ‘Bridge Too Far’ will take place in the Jubilee Lounge at the Warmley Community Centre on Friday November 13 at 7.30 pm.

The presentation will be given by Captain George Harrill (Retired) who is a published military author and battlefield tour guide who frequently leads tour groups to places like Arnhem in Holland and Normandy, France. The presentation will last for two hours and will be given in the form of a military briefing involving a ground model with various military artefacts and uniforms displayed to illustrate the progress of the battle which saw British airborne troops become trapped and eventually rescued from the town of Arnhem during Operation Market Garden in September 1944.

George served in the army for 43 years, He and his wife Dawn are Poppy Appeal Organisers for the Bitton and Oldland branch of the Royal British Legion, who have so far this year raised over £43,000 for veterans and their families. Much of the money came from shoppers buying poppies at Asda in Longwell Green. Should anyone want to help on the ‘Poppy Stand’ at Asda during late October to early November, even for an odd hour or two, please contact Dawn on 07966-267959  or email  dawners@btinternet.com

The Bitton and Oldland RBL Branch was founded on February 22 1927 so will soon be celebrating its centenary. The branch is also planning a cascade of knitted poppies in Bitton next month.

The Arnhem presentation follows on from the popular D-day presentation which George gave in June, which raised £223 for the Legion. Entry is £5. Tea,  coffee and other refreshments will be available during the evening and there is ample parking at the Warmley Community Centre.
