Kings Chase Shopping Centre: 50th Anniversary

Kings Chase Shopping Centre is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025.

When the Centre opened in 1975 it aimed to provide a pedestrianised shopping area with improved access by car, and the Centre has been a focal point for life in Kingswood ever since.

South Gloucestershire Council bought the Kings Chase complex for £10 million in 2021, and the shopping centre has been revamped in order to create more space for community activities and events, as well as improving the aesthetics and waterproofing of the site.

Kingswood Heritage Museum is helping to prepare a community exhibition showcasing the history and memories of the Shopping Centre. This will include some of the many photos held in the Museum’s archives, two of which are shown here.

The first, from the early 1970s and courtesy of Kingswood Borough Council, shows the Gateway supermarket that predated the Shopping Centre. The second (below) shows the Shopping Centre in 1989.

Kingswood Heritage Museum would like to hear from any of our readers who have any special memories or stories about Kings Chase Shopping Centre and the surrounding shops.
