WHITFIELD TABERNACLE TRUST

As part of Kingswood’s Fun in the Park’ event on July 13, the Whitfield Tabernacle Trust organised a table-top curling game where players were asked to slide miniature curling stones through the pictures of the large Tabernacle windows.

“We‘re proud of the windows that were installed in the first phase of our programme to save and develop the 1741 Grade I listed Tabernacle and we thought the game would generate some interest in what we hope to achieve” said trust secretary Kim Scudamore.

Ten-year-old Park School pupil Marshall Tanton emerged as the overall winner of the competition as his name was drawn from those who managed to get at least two of their four curling stones through the windows.  Marshall was presented with his prize by trust chair Anthony Hick.

BRISTOL U3A

BRISTOL u3a can help people make connections and tackle isolation.

Here’s a testament from one of our newest members who, having recently moved to the UK from South Africa, knew hardly anyone locally: “I’m so happy to have joined u3a.  Before joining, my social life was limited to the few friends I had made at my art class and a few neighbours. I was becoming lonely and I felt isolated.

“Changing countries is a challenge. In South Africa, I had and still have a large circle of friends. I keep in touch with them, but there’s nothing like having a nice conversation (or gossip!) over a cup of coffee or a ladies’ lunch.

“Joining u3a has repaired my feeling of isolation. One of the first groups I joined was the French conversation group in Warmley, where I arrived with some apprehension.  My fears were quickly dismissed and now I look forward to every second Tuesday.   also regularly attend socials and have even started my own group inviting artists to attend a monthly meeting to paint and draw.”

Bristol u3a (you in your Third Age) is for anybody. There’s no age limit, but most members are in their 50s upwards. Single membership is £20 a year, and members have access to 200 interest groups across Bristol and around 40 locally.

Why not “try before you buy” by going along to a social or by applying to try an interest group as a taster session?

Just Google “Bristol u3a” to find the full list of groups.  Once you’ve found a group that interests you, click on the group leader’s name and ask to go along.

This month, you’ll find us at the Warmley Flower show on August 2 and at the White Lion in Frenchay from 2.30pm on August 18. Any other questions, contact me at learnlaughlive@bristolu3a.org.uk
