Kingswood is making an ambitious bid to become the UK’s first Town of Culture.
The prize, which follows the success of the City of Culture programme that began in 2013, has been launched by the Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy.
She says too many towns have been “written out of the national story” and she wants the scheme to foster a sense of local pride.
Competition is expected to be strong for the £3m top award, which will be judged by an independent panel chaired by screenwriter and TV producer Phil Redmond.
But Kingswood Town Council has put in a bid, believing that the contest provides “a very strong base from which to tell the story of Kingswood and all that it has to offer”.
A report to councillors said winning would lead to a boost in civic pride, greater participation in cultural activities, and the formation of enduring community partnerships.
