A KINGSWOOD artist has taken on her biggest commission – painting the side of a doubler-decker bus.
Carys Lacey, who usually paints on canvas, has been working for more than six months on the mural illustrating the side of the Circular ArtSpace gallery in Fishponds, which is housed inside a converted bus.
Carys is painting a landscape scene on the side of the bus, which is parked behind the Crafty Egg cafe on Fishponds Road and hosts monthly exhibitions of work by emerging artists. She is creating the work almost entirely with her hands and fingers rather than brushes.
Carys said: “It’s the biggest work I’ve ever done and it’s not finished yet. It’s like a giant finger painting!”
Circular ArtSpace is a not-for-profit Bristol community interest company, dedicated to supporting emerging and under-represented artists. It opened its unique double-decker gallery in 2023, transforming it into an exhibition space after struggling to find suitable more conventional premises. It also hosts online virtual reality exhibitions, and takes no commission on artists’ sales, ensuring they keep all of their earnings.
Co-founder Guglielmo Ardizzone said: “The set up is perfect for exhibitions of different kinds of art and emerging artists who can’t find an exhibition space in a conventional gallery.
The gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 11am to 4pm. Its first exhibition of 2026 starts on January 6.
