Kingswood Court Care Home in Kingswood marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in style by throwing a 1940s afternoon tea party . The home was decorated in red, white and blue and residents and staff dressed up in their 1940s-inspired glad rags and enjoyed an afternoon of big band music and dancing.
Head chef Lee whipped up a selection of freshly-baked biscuits, sandwiches, cakes and pastries for the occasion, all washed down with pots of tea and a celebratory glass of fizz to mark the occasion.
Residents observed the national two-minute silence and listened again to Churchill’s iconic speech accepting Germany’s surrender and an address from the Queen. They reminisced about their memories of VE Day and watched clips of the celebrations that took place outside Buckingham Palace and all across London.
HOLY Trinity Church opened its doors for a flower festival to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
Floral displays were created by members of the church and the community, including The Trinity Garden community growing project run by We Are BS15 and local toddler groups.
Holy Trinity has not had a flower festival since before Covid and the church was delighted the event proved so popular .
Two of the organisers, Janet Hill and Jenny Culliford, said: “We had anticipated managing a ‘mini flower festival’ now that we are all a bit older and some dear friends have passed away, but many of the old team were still keen to offer help and some new faces too. We are very proud of what has been achieved.”

The vicar, Rev Beverley Charles, said: “Holy Trinity Church has a special place in the community and special memories for so many people. We love to open our doors to celebrate occasions like VE Day and share the talents of our members. There is so much in the world today that disrupts our peace, poor health, conflict, work pressures, cost of living – Jesus said, ‘My peace I give you’. Holy Trinity Church is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. You will find a warm welcome, space to sit quietly and pray or a listening ear, or join us on Sundays at 11am.
Donations at the festival raised £277 for the Organ Repair Fund. Follow the church on Facebook @Parishof Kingswood
